Dr. Maytham Al Salman, Head of Religious Freedom Unit in the Bahrain Human Rights Observatory (“BHRO”) met with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Mr. Mutuma Ruteere.
Al Salman informed the Special Rapporteur that ethnic discrimination and sectarian persecution and religious contempt are the most prevalent contemporary forms of racism in Bahrain where the majority of population suffer from racism.
The Special Rapporteur expressed his readiness to visit Manama after many international reports talked about Bahrain’s systematic practice of racial (sectarian) discrimination against the Shiites.
On behalf of the BHRO and civil institutions in Bahrain, Al Salman welcomed the visit of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. Al Salman emphasized that the delegations of the UN Human Rights Council to Bahrain will certainly contribute to move forward in the right direction to put an end to the systematic violations of human rights in Bahrain.
